It is a process of elimination and sometimes luck. Start by removing access panels or looking under insulation, check voids where pipes may run. Look for signs of wet or damp especially near pipe bends or fittings and trace back from there. Copper pipes can become porous over time but cannot always be seen by the naked eye.
Outside the property you should have the main stopcock normally sited in the pavement directly outside. Within your property you should have a working stopcock that can isolate the incoming main before it feeds to the house supplies.
Visually check all toilet cisterns, valves, outlets, overflows and taps, not forgetting any outside taps for obvious leaks. Once satisfied that these are not leaking, look for signs of damp or water around the incoming water meter.
It is known as "water hammer" , usually it will be caused by a section of pipework that is not clipped securely and starts to vibrate when water passes through it and mixes with trapped air. This can normally be resolved by simply adjusting isolation valves or slightly opening or closing the main stopcock.
Check the appliance wastes. They need to be full with water to ensure that the foul air within the outlet pipes does not blow back through the wastes. If the wash basins and showers have not been used for a while the water traps can evaporate, especially throughout the hotter summer months.
The waste pipe could be blocked with hair or limescale matter and soap residue. A blockage would have to be cleared by either using a drain unblocker chemical or mechanical rodding if the blockage was more severe. If using chemicals it is important to use a product that will not react with the plastic waste pipes.
Over time, a worn out tap would be the cause of a drip. Most taps have hot and cold quarter turn cartridges that can be replaced providing the correct replecement part can be identified. There are many different cartridge designs available and it is vital to get the correct part for your tap.
This would indicate an issue with the filling valve or possibly a leak within the flush valve mechanism. This problem should be resolved as soon as possible as you will be wasting water and running up a large water bill if not fixed.
Most common cause would be air in the radiator.Use a bleed key to carefuly purge air from the radiator whilst the heating is off and the central heating pump is not running. If your system is old the radiators may have a build up of sludge that should be removed to restore heating efficiency.
